With support from the World Resource Forum (WRF), the contribution of women in E-waste and Scraps management Ghana is recognized. An unprecedented association for Ladies in E-Waste and Scraps (LEWSA) was formalized to strengthen the niche created by women on the e-waste and scrap value chain in Ghana. Since their registration in 2022, Ecocent in partnership with GIZ E- Waste, has assisted the women have their voice heard and considered in decision making in a male dominanted trade. We have also developed their capacity in safe and sound management of E-waste. Again, we assisted in building strong networks with stakeholders in the public sector such as the police department in order to secure their trade from unscrupulous actors.
Currently, the project is focused on mobilizing women involved in mobile scrap trade. They are undergoing capacity development for subsequent integration into the existing association (LEWSA). More than 300 women make up LEWSA.
Future projects seek to expand the scope to include women contributing in other regions in the Ghana. Additionally, we are poised to formalize women on plastic waste value chain in 2025.
